Northeast Ohio Bankruptcy Attorney John R. Bates | Bates and Hausen

John R. Bates graduated from law school in 1972 and has practiced law ever since. He was voted the outstanding student of his graduating class by the law school faculty and delivered the commencement address. He and his then law partner established one of the first legal clinics in the country in 1974.

He has taught law courses in several colleges and at Arizona State University College of Law. He has spoken to various lawyer groups throughout the country, including Ohio, about bankruptcy.

In 1976, he won the landmark U.S. Supreme Court case, Bates v. State Bar of Arizona, which, for the first time, established the right of lawyers to use yellow pages and websites for advertising. You can read about it at this website. This case is studied by law students across the country and Mr. Bates is nationally known because of it.

Mr. Bates is considered a national authority on bankruptcy exemptions. He created a website dealing with exemptions for bankruptcy lawyers which is used by lawyers across the nation. You may look at it here:

His practice has been limited solely to bankruptcy law for many years. He has filed thousands of bankruptcies for residents of Northeast Ohio. In 2011, Mr. Bates joined Attorney James F. Hausen to form a larger bankruptcy law practice that would make it possible to represent clients from all over Northeast Ohio.
